VILLAGE HOME SHOW | EPISODE 10

On this episode of the Village Home Show, you’ll learn about the different types of countertop materials to fit your lifestyle and taste. We’ll take you on a tour to one of our stone fabrication shops to see the customization process. We will also show you a before and after kitchen story that includes Formica’s 180FX series with a marble counter fakeout.

Types of Countertops

There are many types of countertops to choose from: natural stone, solid surface, and traditional laminate. As for the investment, the granite, solid surface, and quartz are very similar at a higher price. However, laminate countertops have a different price variable, but run half the price of a granite countertop.

When comparing a laminate countertop to a solid surface countertop, they are not heat and scratch resistant. Because quartz countertops are nonporous, there is no maintenance required.

With a natural stone, there is a sealant applied to the stone because the surface is porous. Typically you shouldn’t have to reseal the stone for another 10 years, but it all depends on how much you use the countertop kits. Natural stones come in large slabs of material so you can expect seams. For customers concerned about seams, they should view the slabs and choose the best one for their kitchen design. When the fabricator comes to the customer’s home to do the template, he will look for the placement of the seam.

Fortunately, natural stone countertops can also be installed in bathrooms. One of the best choices for your bathroom is the quartz countertop due to its low maintenance factor. We also offer marble because it is easy to keep clean and care for.

The Edge Profile

The edge profile may seem like a small detail, but it’s that type of detail that gives your countertop an appealing look. There are a variety of options to choose from. However, some are limited to certain material. In the category of stone countertops, there are a number of edge profile options available such as a standard ease edge, half round edge, and more. Other interesting edge options include the rustic, chisel profile. Each category of countertop material has a number of edge options for you and your design needs.

The Fabrication Process

Whenever a price is quoted for countertops, fabrication is included in the price. The fabrication process involves the following stages:

  1. We take the physical template that we made at the job site and trace them on the slab.
  2. The fabricator places the template on the slab and cuts them to the exact size using a saw.
  3. After the sawing process, the slab goes to the edge polishing machine which grinds and polishes the edge.
  4. After the polishing machine, it goes to the sink cutout machine and polishes the edges. A high-speed spindle, a diamond tip bit, and lots of water are used to cut out the sink.
  5. The final product ends up in the finish area where we put the final details on the project.

Before and After Kitchen in Geneseo, IL

countertops fabrication process Geneseo ILMany of our featured kitchens include rooms that have been opened up because of a wall being removed. In this Geneseo, IL home, we used the same space and just added new materials without removing walls.

Village Home Stores transformed this Geneseo kitchen by adding the following features:

  • Removed soffits and installed taller wall cabinets, giving the kitchen a more modern look and extra storage space
  • Added crown molding and a light rail above the wall cabinets
  • Laminate countertops give the countertops a natural illusion of marble
  • Added a full wrap edge profile, allowing the material to fully wrap around and under the tops. This means no visible laminate seams appear on the front edge.
  • Laminate countertops fabricated with a post form backsplash, giving a true marble appearance
  • A new, sturdy sink
  • Added LED lighting, giving the kitchen natural lighting

With each decision for your overall project, there are smaller choices to be made such as the type of material, color or design, and edge profile.  We’ll transform your ideas into reality in Geneseo, IL and the surrounding area.

VILLAGE HOME SHOW | EPISODE 9

Amazing Kitchen, Bath, & Laundry Design Project

Welcome back for another great episode of the Village Home Show. This show is our opportunity to not only tell you about the kitchen and bath projects going on in the area, but we can show you the entire design process from beginning to end. Expect to see projects of various sizes, budgets, and sizes to accommodate your design needs.

Since your kitchen and bathroom are the two most important areas of your home, make sure they are updated with the perfect countertops, cabinetry, and appliances to give your home that finished look it deserves. At Village Home Stores, we can transform your living area into a much easier and accessible design to accommodate your needs.

Tayor Ridge Home With a New Look

Kitchen and bath remodel Quad CitiesOur latest featured update is a kitchen, bath, and laundry area. With a beautiful countryside view, this Taylor Ridge, IL, home is a wonderful example of what new traditional means in kitchen remodeling. Like many homes, this original U-shaped kitchen layout includes a peninsula that separates the dining space from the kitchen area. Several areas in the kitchen needed an upgrade, including the soffits, cabinets, doors, laminate countertops, a scalloped valance above the window, refrigerator, and an unuseful wall of space that separated the kitchen. The original kitchen also included an entire wall, making the kitchen look smaller with no open space. All of these areas had room for improvement. Do any of these details sound familiar in your home? Then you will love to see how Village Home Stores can transform your living space.

When designing the layout we envisioned a much larger living space that included multiple finishes and materials to give the home a more modern look. First, the wall was removed to give the kitchen area a L-shape layout. Also, a large single-level island was custom built in the new space. This allowed plenty of seating in the adjacent dining room and at the new island in the kitchen. The new island is stained with rich mocha to add contrast to the colorful design. To be able to use small appliances at the new counter space, an outlet is camouflaged on one side of the island.

New farm sink remodel Taylor Ridge ILNext, the sink wall had a window above a new farm sink and the refrigerator was moved to a new area in the kitchen. We made sure the cooking zone became the focal point of the kitchen, so we added painted cabinetry and glass door cabinets. Across the kitchen, a custom built hutch was installed to add extra storage space and help accent the kitchen.

In addition to the kitchen, we also remodeled the bathroom and laundry room, which shares a wall with the kitchen. The original bathroom had a single sink vanity which was replaced with a double bowl vanity. Custom built cabinets were built around them to allow extra cabinet space. We installed were sliding barn doors which is one of our favorite design choices by many clients. Sliding barn doors are placed at the entrance of the space. When you slide it back, the homeowner enters the new beautiful bathroom.

Having the laundry area in the bathroom is a unique feature which makes washing clothes so much easier. With the bedrooms just down the hall, this laundry area became more accessible and convenient. We also installed a heavy duty front load washer and dryer by Maytag. The Maytag Maxima Series is built with the commercial technology you count on from Maytag. It has a wide range of features and prevents moisture from building up in the gasket.

Beautiful Appliances

Remodel spacious kitchen in Quad CitiesIf you’re looking to spruce up your kitchen with the latest appliances, then choose our new exclusive black stainless steel by Kitchenaid. It looks amazing when paired with dark cabinetry. We also offer a black stainless finish on our range hoods. Black stainless appliances are the perfect contrast to lighter cabinetry.

To accent the glass door cabinetry, we installed can lights and diode LED lighting system. This lighting system helps wash the beautiful new backsplash tile with light.

Stunning Quad Cities Kitchen Remodel

So Great It Needed a WHOLE Episode

We are already up to episode 8 of the Village Home Show! We always want to tell you about new and exciting products for your kitchen and bath and show you ideas from our existing projects in Illinois and Iowa.

On the latest episode, you will see a kitchen remodel that is SO big that we use our whole episode to show you the project from beginning to end! The new kitchen features gray cabinetry from Dura Supreme, Cambria Quartz Countertops, a stainless steel appliance package from KitchenAid, and lighting and tile that will make you wish that this kitchen was yours!

Before We Begin

before1The original kitchen had medium oak cabinets and dark countertops. The cabinets had a raised panel door. The look was very traditional. There was also a very nice full height backsplash which was a great feature in this 22-year-old kitchen. There were quite a few walls that blocked the view in this kitchen, which will be going away in the remodeled kitchen.

The dining room has an amazing view into the woods. There is a wall that divides the two areas and blocks a lot of great natural light. There is also a walled off cooking zone that had no prep space which gave a crowded feel for he space. You will note that there was a decorative oak valence. You just wait to see what replaced it! The kitchen was traditional and warm wood towns. You will see a big change from this styling.

Out with the Old, in with the NEW Kitchen!

kitchen1Definitely watch the segment from our friends at Dura Supreme about the cabinetry used and the process the company takes in finding the best and newest styles and finishes. They spare no expense in finding the best products and trends on the market today.

All of the view-blocking walls are now gone. Now instead of a kitchen with a small dinette area there is a whole new upper level of this home. There is a new kitchen area, dining space, and great room area. New hardwood has been installed throughout. We used a product called Ram Board. As you watch shows like “Love it or List It“, “This Old House“, and “Income Property“, look down and you will see this product in use!

other_areasThe first thing you will notice is the open and airy look of the new space. You will see a knee-wall that is built in bar-height for the support of an eat in kitchen. Cabinets are completely transformed from the dark green and oak from before to a cherry kitchen with a “Caraway” finish in gray. Notice the details like the door profile and the knife edge option on the Cambria quartz countertops. There is striking tile, a field tile that has been installed horizontally. It has a woodgrain look that looks great with the cabinets.

One of the most impressive things is the backsplash design of cascading glazzio mosaic tile behind the stainless hood. Check out the beautiful waterfall effect it brings. The appliances are all top of the line with tons of great features you won’t get elsewhere Pop up outlets lend to the clean finished look. There is a softap dimmer switch for just the right level of light. There is tons of smart storage as well, including a 36″ pantry cabinet with slide out shelves that adjust.

Notice the sleek and stylish single drill faucet by Axor with the under mount Kohler sink with a low divider. This kitchen is one of the most stunning and sophisticated remodels Village Home Stores has completed. We want to thank the homeowners for sharing this experience with us. We are thrilled to share this Quad Cities treasure with you!

VILLAGE HOME SHOW | EPISODE 7

Bathroom Remodel Duo & Some Amazing Switches and Outlets

We welcome you to watch Episode 7 of the Village Home Show! In this episode of the show we are excited to share two remodeling stories of local bathrooms that get a huge reboot! We have shown many kitchen remodels, but this time we are exploring bathrooms.

Another topic we are excited to cover in this episode is new options for outlets and light switches. They really are something special.

Spacious Bettendorf Bathroom Gets a Makeover

The first bathroom we look at in this episode had a ton of space already. The homeowners were right in knowing that just a few changes could really make it really suit their needs. Village Homes Stores gave it a warm, neutral look with a traditional style that creates an amazing getaway for the homeowners. You will notice an arched area that has a custom fit cherry bench seat. The tub was replaced with a cherry bench complete with a wood top to match that gives the homeowners extra storage. You will notice decorative fronts that open to reveal storage drawers – both functional and beautiful!

Above the bench you will note an arched valance that compliments the other arches throughout the home. Our carpenters worked with the homeowners to maintain the arch look with a template, so each had the same look. There are wooden corbels finished to match the bench, which are the perfect backdrop for the caged light fixture. What an impression you get when you see it!

The biggest change to the structure is the space that contained the shower before. There is now a custom tiled shower that has been opened up to the entire room with glass on two sides. It creates an amazing open look. The look is completed with a wall niches that was installed for shower items and a tiled bench seat in the corner. The homeowners will enjoy the heated tile floor that we are sure they will enjoy this winter! The vanities were upgraded with new granite counters and sinks. It is all tied together with a wonderful mix of hardware finishes throughout. From entrance to the room to each fixture, light, and space, this new bathroom is one that will surely delight the homeowners for years to come. Surely one of the most amazing in the Bettendorf area!

5 Star Bathroom Retreat in Colona, IL

A lot went into the preparations for the second we have to share with you on this episode. The original bathroom had a very large layout with lots of great natural light. The homeowners were looking for ways to make better use of their space. The entire bathroom was demo-ed including the master bedroom attached to the bath. The tiled tub pedestal and wood apron were removed to make way for the new freestanding tub. An arched tray ceiling above the new tub frames in the statement wall that draws your eye from the unique tub to the new light above it.

The shower goes into the same location but there is an addition of a bench seat, custom wall shelf, and new shower head and control system. What an incredible space to use! There is a custom tiled shower with mosaic accents in the new space to finish the look of the shower. You will notice the same mosaic tiles repeated as a bold statement on each of the vanity walls.

There are two walk in closets in the master suite with new trim and doors throughout the master bedroom and bath. This master bathroom will have new and innovative Adorne Collection switches and receptacles. It’s like a spa getaway at a 5 star hotel at home!

VILLAGE HOME SHOW | EPISODE 6

Local Kitchen Remodels Before & After

Welcome to Episode 6 of the Village Home Show. In this episode we will share with you the before and after stories of two remodeled kitchens right in our local area. Also in this episode, an expert in tile will discuss options and the latest trends in kitchen tile. We will also take a close look at the backsplash surfaces selected for each kitchen.

A Backsplash Adds Texture and Style to Your Space

The 18″ space from your kitchen countertop to the bottom of your wall cabinetry is a great surface to express your personal style. If you have a larger area of wall above a cooktop, range, or kitchen sink you have even more of an opportunity to add texture and style to your space.

The before photos featured in this episode may look familiar to many of the viewers in this area. Many of the homes in the Quad City area were built in the 1950′s. Many of the kitchens that we remodel have similar before photos.

In this kitchen remodel, imagine this kitchen with just a painted wall instead of this stylish Walker Zanger tile. The unique lines of the shape and even the matte finish texture of the tile add a lot to the overall look.

Backsplash Trends and Options

There are various categories of tile material that can be installed in a kitchen backsplash. These Backsplash by Village Home Stores are:Backsplash by Village Home Stores

  • Ceramic
  • Glass
  • Metal
  • Natural Stone
  • Combinations of all of these

Customers select the backsplash material based on personal preference, installation and design. Customers do not have to choose just one type of tile and install it throughout. Village Home Stores has experts that can help in selection, design and installation.

One of the questions that comes up is do you choose the countertop first or the tile material for the backsplash. This all comes down to personal preference again. Whether you choose the countertop first or the tile, one will help you to decide the other. If a customer is trying to narrow down a countertop color, finding a tile they love will help make that decision.

Some of the trends that we are seeing within the past year and moving into the year to come are lots of B-Roll and response classic and timeless looks. People tend to avoid installing trendy materials.

The materials are priced by the square foot with an option to add installation costs. If a customer is interested in getting a quote, they can contact the experts at Village Home Stores for a quote on the materials and square footage of the area.

This Remodeled Rock Island Kitchen Added Storage

The original kitchen in this Rock Island home included an entire empty wall offering no storage During remodel by Village HOme Storesat all. If this kitchen was going to get remodeled it needed to be done to use the space much smarter and open it up to the areas nearby.

The white thermofoil cabinetry and black and white flecked laminate countertops were in need of an update and the original layout was cramped and crowded for more than one user. A front living room and adjacent dining room surrounded the original kitchen in this ranch home with the kitchen walled off from these spaces. The goal of the new design from Village Home Stores was to create one open space including all of the same zones.

In the new design, seating has been added to the area of wall that was removed from the existing kitchen. This shifted the dining room table to move into the front room area. A hallway down to the left includes an existing built-in linen cabinet that will also get replaced with cabinetry to match the kitchen.

Kitchen Remodel From Floor to Ceiling

Brand new maple hardwood was installed throughout and gives this home a warmth to the new Before remodel by Village Home Stores kitchen in a way that could not be matched with any tile or laminate. New interior doors and trim were also installed to keep all of the wood finished in a similar wood tone throughout.

Birch wood cabinetry in the seneca door style and briarwood stain and a black accent glaze are perfectly paired with the Cambria quartz counters in the Blackwood design. On the sink wall the tile on the wall truly grabs your attention. This backsplash time is a wonderful example of one that makes a big impact. This cappuccino linear mosaic tile is illuminated by our diode led system beneath the wall cabinetry. The tile even reflects onto the dark Cambria tops in a way that mirrors the tile back onto the tops.

The original kitchen included just the sink wall of cabinetry and a small area for the range in another location. After remodel by Village Home StoresWith three windows and three doorways in this room, the available wall space was limited. The new kitchen design includes a built-in hutch in the old location of the range. This allows a place to display items above but also offers up the perfect location for serving from when entertaining.

The range is now located between the two windows and surrounded by wall and base cabinetry in a symmetrical layout. A microwave hood is framed in by varied depths and heights to create interest.

We removed the grid ceiling and tiles and replace it with a new plastered one adding texture and the opportunity to include a lighting plan with recess cans and a ceiling fan centered in the space.

This kitchen is a great opportunity to point out how to handle the areas where there isn’t a clear starting or stopping point to the backsplash. At the sink, there is a clear place where your eye expects the tile to end and the painted wall to begin. The area near the range is different. In this case, the tile cuts down directly from the cabinet end point and travels to meet the tile from the bar-height top area to the left.

Not everyone wants the look of a stainless hood in their space. A wood hood can be ordered to match the kitchen cabinets. With all of the new cabinetry extending up to the ceiling with crown molding, there is no way to stagger the wood hood. The designer from Village Home Stores created interest with a slight change in depth and the addition of an arched paneled shelf above.

Instead of an over-the-range microwave, the microwave was installed on the new refrigerator wall. This a wonderful solution for keeping the countertop free of appliances.

We also will share with you many more examples of great kitchen islands. Last up, the Village Home Stores lighting expert joins us to show us some great ways to shed some light above your kitchen island as well!

We are so lucky to get to work on many new homes and remodeled spaces in Quad Cities area and beyond in Illinois and Iowa. For our show, we have been welcomed into some of those great spaces so that we can share them with you. One of the things that we are excited to share is an item that has evolved a lot over the years: The Kitchen Island. It can be a work station, family meeting area, serving area, or even a main dining area.

Since the kitchen island is usually the center of your kitchen space. Entire kitchens can be planned around them. Furniture-like islands have become a popular item, and sometimes, even multiple islands are installed. Now is the time to get creative when it comes to your kitchen island, there are so many options available to you. We want to share a few of those ideas with you!

Kitchen Island Excellence in Orion, Illinois

kitchen island design Orion, ILThe original layout of the kitchen we share from Orion included an extension off the wall that had seating available. You might hear this called a kitchen peninsula. Unfortunately, this didn’t not leave space for anything but a tiny island without much usable countertop space. The new layout that we designed has an L-shaped peninsula and a large island that is centered in the space. The new island is almost four times the size of the original! You will note in the new design that the back side of the island is now the location of an eat in seating area. You can seat three on the back of the new island and many more around the island. You can have a crowd and no one is in the way of the main areas in the new design.

The island has a nice, consistent look all throughout, from every angle! The entire kitchen has been opened up. You can see that it opens into the front room and nearby dining area of the home. You can easily see how this is a wonderfully cohesive space. It’s the perfect island for this space and this Orion, Illinois family will be enjoying it for years to come!

Beautiful Kitchen Island Lighting from Our Expert

kitchen island lighting Quad CitiesFor the most part, above a kitchen island you will find pendant lighting. Every kitchen island is very different, with different functions for each family. The number of pendants can vary because of your specific needs. Many time large pendants in pairs will be utilized and this is a trend we are seeing more of. It’s important to consult an expert to know if a fixture will work well for the space, and the height that pendant should be hung at.

Our team at Village Home Stores are experts at finding the right lighting for your kitchen island. Whether you are doing homework,  or having a late dinner, the right lighting can make all the difference. We have many lighting options at our showroom in Geneseo, and we would love to show you! Kitchen Island Versatility for Quad City Area Homes

The kitchen island is the center for all the hustle and bustle of your home. You eat meals around it, gather as family around it, prepare meals, do homework. It needs to be a highly functional, versatile area for your family. Islands are commonly included in new homes. It can include an overhang for people to sit at, design that allows you to finish off the look of your kitchen, tons of storage space suited for your very specific needs, and more.

Your designer from Village Home Stores can help you configure the perfect kitchen island design for your home. You can get help deciding on the number and size of doors to apply to get the right look for your kitchen, making the most of your space. We will be keeping you and your family in mind during the design process. You can select the countertops, trim, moldings, decorative elements, outlet placement, and panels to complete your look with the help of our design team.

Grand Kitchen Island in Geneseo, IL

kitchen island heights Geneseo, ILThe second kitchen island you see on episode four is one in Geneseo, IL. This home includes an island that allows us to showcase all the heights you can design into your own kitchen island. A standard kitchen countertop measures 36 inches from floor to countertop and is found in the example in Geneseo. There is another section that is called “bar-height” and it measures 42 inches. This can be bumped up to 48 inches if needed. As you can see on the show we can include many outlets as needed. You can make them similar in color to the backsplash to camouflage them well. The seating section on our example is at dining height. The bench area built into the island has been installed to sit at the same height as a dining chair and table.

With the Geneseo, IL example you can watch and see just how customized your kitchen island space can be from where the paper towels are placed to keeping in mind user traffic and appliance use. We really do keep every little detail in mind when we are designing your kitchen and kitchen island. It’s wise to remember that when you are designing a new home you can bundle together purchases throughout our whole store to claim free lighting for your home. Call us for details! Our staff is here to help you pick the perfect island and island lighting for your home.

Rock Island Kitchen Upgrade Allows Owners to Store More!

Main2In the Rock Island kitchen you will see in the episode that the kitchen needed more space and lots more storage for the home owners. In the original kitchen the space was just too crowded if more than one person was in the kitchen. If you look at the new kitchen design, we removed the hallway wall and a supporting header was installed above. There was now space for a two level island in the new kitchen! This adds tons of preparation space and a great place for family and guests to gather around. We removed the soffits above the existing cabinets and included new cabinetry that reaches all the way to the ceiling that also adds more storage space. The room is opened up and there is tons of great new storage available! There is a storage area that is located at the end of the old hallway that has become incorporated into the new design.

Dura Surpreme: Experts on Storage Space for Your Quad City Kitchen

durasupreme_cabinetryWe make it our goal at Village Home Stores to find the very best in cabinet space, and we want to help you know how to use it to it’s fullest. Our set at WQAD has many examples of amazing storage solutions. In this episode we welcomed John from Dura Surpreme to help us understand all our options.

We knew that the station set was going to get plenty of use by many guests. We choose to install Dura Surpreme because of their solid construction, but an added benefit is the style and usability. John showed how important it is that the drawers are solid and the guides can easily handle the weight of the content of those cabinet drawers. John’s favorite is the mixer lift-up because it keeps your mixer from taking up counterspace. There is also an amazing pullout spice rack. They come in larger sizes which are great for cleaning supplies or even canisters. Another option is a lazy susan, which is unique because it has curved doors.

Gorgeous Countryside Kitchen Remodel in Lynn Center, IL

Main Corner ViewWe worked on a beautiful kitchen remodel in Lynn Center, IL. The space has absolutely beautiful views of the countryside and the large great room it sits within. This kitchen has modern storage features, but manages to maintain the rustic look that was just right for this country living space.

We used rustic beech cabinets from Koch Classic, which is a popular choice if you want to add a rustic look to your space. It has a beautiful stone backed island that you can’t help but notice right away. The stone adds texture and interest in this beautiful remodeled kitchen. The natural stone countertops complement the space just beautifully. The stone was mined in Brazil and has a ton of character. Many options are included for storage including double bin cabinets for recycling, pull out waste baskets, lazy susans, and a large pantry. There is even a hidden TV behind pocket doors right above the refrigerator!

One really exciting feature is the brew express coffee system that is built into the kitchen wall to keep the counter clutter and cord free. This system is available from Village Home Stores and can be retrofitted into your existing kitchen space.

A rustic kitchen that is also clutter free and full of character makes for another beautiful remodel in the Quad Cities Area from Village Homes Stores. We are proud to serve the Quad Cities in Illinois and Iowa for their kitchen remodeling needs, and are one of the largest providers of materials for new homes and new home construction in the Quad Cities. VILLAGE HOME SHOW | EPISODE 2

2 Great Kitchen Remodels Around the Quad Cities with Village Home Show!

Kitchen Remodeling in Bettendorf – Open Concept, Open Mind!

We first met this Bettendorf, IA couple at the QCBR Home Show last Winter. They had been considering a remodel to their existing kitchen for a number of years but hadn’t really been inspired yet to take on the full kitchen remodel for their Bettendorf home.

After meeting Village Home Stores at their home, our designer suggested something that they hadn’t even considered before…removing a wall and opening the space. An existing wall divided the front Living Room area from the current kitchen. Our designer was able to show them a rendered drawing of a possible layout of the kitchen if that wall was removed. Now they were even more intrigued.

Time passed as they considered the project and the more they stared at that wall, the more they realized… that wall had to go.

kitchen remodeling in Bettendorf, IAThis new kitchen features Koch cabinets in the Seneca Birch “Briarwood” stain and a complete suite of Stainless Steel Whirlpool appliances give this kitchen an updated look while looking right at home in the space. Instead of matching the exact color of Oak trim and furniture throughout the home, the flooring and cabinets change to a similar tone but a more closed grain of wood. Selecting wood tones that compliment each other instead of duplicating a finish can really give off a more polished look in many cases.

Right when I walked in the door to see the finished project I said, “Please tell me we put these floors in for you.” Because they were so beautiful they almost distracted me from the reason I was stopping by (to see the new kitchen). These Acacia hand-scraped wood floors in the “Hazelnut” finish look so outstanding in person! The light really catches all that hand-scraped detail so well.

The hardwood was installed from the front door on through the living room and then into the new kitchen and eat-in area. This investment is a key ingredient in making this new space seem like an open floorplan that belongs in this home. There is now no visible trace of the wall that once blocked the view and light into the kitchen.

The “Coffee Brown” granite countertops were actually purchased as part of our promotional color program at just $59 a sq. ft. and look so perfect with the strip of accent tile selected for the backsplash. We are often asked about how our stone fabricators “hide” the support brackets for the overhang on a granite top. This island top is a great example to show you. Notched into the back cabinet and panel to sit flush with the top of the cabinet, these steel supports are hidden from plain sight. The length, location, and amount of countertop supports your project may need will be based on the depth of the top and the length of the material to be supported.

sliding shelves in cabinetThe previous kitchen layout only had one small stack of drawers. This new design now includes many drawers including large pots & pans drawers on the sink wall. The end cabinet shown here has slide-out shelves to help organize Tupperware containers and lids.

There is also a pull-out trash cabinet and more added drawers in the island facing the kitchen sink.

By removing an existing wall to bury a supporting header within, the space is now open and bright. Can lights were added to the front room as well as a ceiling fan. We are so glad to have arranged and coordinated all of the teams of players who made this space great. Our thanks this Bettendorf couple for striking up a conversation with us at last year’s home show and for inviting us back in to share it with you readers. This Holiday season is going to be great for them in their new kitchen!

A Surprising Bettendorf Remodel

On this second kitchen in Bettendorf so many people asked what was wrong with the before kitchen? Let us explain!

Some History:

The inital view of this kitchen looks really great at first look. In person though, there are many reasons why a remodel would have happened within the next few years regardless. Like many remodel stories, this one begins with a leaking pipe. A reverse osmosis system ended up flooding the floor of the existing kitchen damaging the current floor and the base section cabinets of the island and some of the perimeter.

Previous owners had painted the existing oak cabinets a cream color and attempted to add a rub-on glaze to accent the paint. This was not done professionally or with the correct materials. Over a very short amount of time, the cabinets were already starting to show some wear. Notice the door beyond refrigerator and the charging station? That leads to the guest bath. That bathroom deserves a blog post all on its own so stay tuned. Trust us when we tell you it is just as gorgeous as this kitchen.

The New Design:

With three young children and busy lifestyle, a functional use of space for this busy family was priority. If you scroll back up and look at the Before image you will notice that the lower section of all the the wall cabinets included a drawer. Not to convenient for the younger members of this family to reach the first shelf above that for a glass or plate. Industry standard is to have that first shelf to be about 54-55″ from the floor. In the original plan the first usable shelf above the drawers was placed at 63″. See the new layout designed Village Home Stores for a birdseye view of the new space.

Hood Above Gas CooktopThe Before picture also shows the old location of the cook top was on the same wall as it is now. The user in the old layout was very crowded by the refrigerator immediately to its right. The cooking area of the new design now includes plenty of prep space on either side as well as a lot of style. The matching wood hood conceals a Broan blower within and this section becomes the main focal point of that facing wall of the kitchen. Pulling the cooktop forward and adding furniture legs and a valance in the toespace draws attention to this whole section of the kitchen from floor to ceiling.
Command Center In KitchenAppliances in the original kitchen were miss-matched and crowded. Now a package of built-in KitchenAid appliances along with a Sharp microwave drawer complete the new kitchen. Built-in appliances in better locations now give a high-end look and offer the best experience for the users. A 42″ wide panel-ready refrigerator was the perfect choice. Plenty of storage within and no large panels of Stainless Steel to distract from the overall look.

A shallow cabinet caps off the Built-in refrigerator and conceals a kitchen command center area immediately accessed when entering from the garage. Directly behind this command center is an open charging station as well.Kitchen Charging Station

The Look:Bettendorf cabinetry and countertops

The cabinetry in this kitchen is from a semi-custom line. By upgrading construction and adding details to the standard cabinets it gives the appearance of a fully custom kitchen. Elements like stacked moldings, furniture valances in the toespaces, and accent legs have been added to give this kitchen that “magazine” look. The overlapping arches of the leaded glass doors is a detail you may see in a cabinet mullion from a custom product. By using a local glass vendor we were able to mimic that style at a fraction of the cost. The palette of colors and finishes all work together. A mix of metals and finishes were carefully calculated by the homeowner and designer and the end result is a stunning symphony of many elements. Taupe Kitchen Palette

The perimeter of the kitchen is the Koch “Westbrook” door style. It is a Birch wood painted “Pearl” and an “Umber” glaze has been applied. The cabinet construction has been upgraded to a dovetailed drawerbox on full-extension, soft-closing guides. The cabinet doors also have a soft-closing hinge. Oil-Rubbed bronze hardware by Top Knobs from their “Normandy” collection stand out perfectly with the Umber glaze framing each handle and knob perfectly. Backplates behind the door knobs make a big impact and help reflect the overall style of the space.

The large island in the new design is also from Koch. The same “Westbrook” door this time in a Cherry wood has been finished in the “Java” color. The new island has more of a furniture look to it. Access to storage from all sides of the space add function and the Microwave drawer is easily accessible but hidden from first sight as you enter the room. Legs have been added to the raised eat-in area of the Island in the same style as the cook top bump-out area. Hardware has been switched to Weathered Nickel finish to give contrast to the dark cabinet and compliment the stainless appliances.

Cream and Dark Kitchen Colors

The wow-factor for this kitchen really begins as you step into the whole new space. Looking at a snapshot of the kitchen does show its beauty but seeing the space as a part of the “big picture” is where the real impact is. Now the entire lower-level of this home has a cohesive look. The furnishings in the den, living room, dine-in kitchen area and adjacent dining room all blend into one space that matches perfectly to the taste of the owners. A Quatrefoil shape is repeated in the backsplash and even island shape. Warm taupe and putty colors make a neutral accent choice that will look timeless over the years. “Delicatus” Granite countertops throughout brought the entire look together. If you have any questions about materials or colors you see here or in the houzz album, don’t hesitate to ask.

Taupe Backsplash

This busy Bettendorf family had an unexpected turn of events that they took as an opportunity to build a dream kitchen perfect for them. We were more than happy to help them design a space that works for them. It is such an added bonus that the customers were a joy to work with and the finished kitchen is now one of our favorite “After” pictures ever. What does your dream kitchen look like? A Totally Fresh Look in the Quad Cities

Quad Cities Kitchen RemodelThe first before and after on our first episode is a fresh look for an outdated kitchen. The layout worked for the homeowners but the only thing that was kept from the original design was the hardwood floors. The new kitchen is bright and beautiful! Painted birch cabinets from the Koch Classic Line adorn the walls. There is a Whirlpool side by side refrigerator with a much bigger pantry and a double range that gives many baking options. There is a special cabinet in the kitchen that is located to the left of the range. It is called a blind corner cabinet. Some people shudder when they hear this, but this is a great design! It has half-moon shaped shelves that swing and slide making it very easy to use the whole space.

Gone are the old laminate countertops, replaced with a beautiful granite countertop. Where the old desk used to be there is a china hutch with a custom built look. It has glass doors and a furniture valance in the toespace. What a great way to hide away things that used to clutter the space before. Something extra special in the space is a mosaic tile backsplash. It blends beautifully with the stainless, ceramic, and glass. It is not only the bigger things in this space that make it special, but those small things as well that create a beautiful and welcoming space!

A Big Reveal – Geneseo, IL

Image 38We now move on a great before and after story from our hometown of Geneseo, IL. The kitchen in the home was all original oak, and was in need of a fresh look. The main
issue was to make a more functional use of the space. It has been updated with cherry
kitchen cabinets and granite countertops. The new hardwood floors are stunning and run
through the kitchen and dinning areas. We added built-in stainless steel appliances from Kitchenaid. With undercabinet lighting, they can change the feel of the room by dimming the lights.

We removed a laundry room wall which allowed for space for two pantry cabinets on either side of the oven with the new design. There is a wonderful backdoor bench area right inside the garage entry. What a great place to entry the home and get items stored right away before you go any further. There is an all new wet bar area just outside the kitchen which is great for entertaining. This is a wonderful, busy family that now can make better use of their space with the new layout and design! They even have a wonderful new desk area with extra storage. There is even a USB outlet for charging phones and other devices.
